Plywood is made from bonded timber layers. For a bench, bookcase or child’s room, the layered edge is not the whole decision: face grade, thickness, supports and moisture exposure all matter.
Materials and finishes
A useful choice only when it suits the brief
The right decision connects appearance with construction and maintenance. For projects in Barcelona, we also check the actual light, access and conditions in the room.
Shelves with an agreed load
A book shelf differs from one for lighter objects. Span and thickness follow the exact panel specified.
Furniture that may be moved
Final weight depends on timber, thickness and size. We review delivery as well as the stability of the unit.
Finished faces
The face can remain visible or take veneer, laminate or paint. Each route changes preparation and care.
Cut-outs and joints
Internal voids vary between panels. Screws and joints are chosen against the actual board section.
Use near moisture
Not every plywood grade is suitable for water exposure. Product class, protected edges and installation must all suit the location.

Plywood starts with the right panel grade
The layered edge is visible, but construction and intended use decide whether a panel belongs in the piece.
Faces are not all alike
A bench or bookcase may need a selected decorative face; a hidden component may not. We also check internal voids and edge regularity. The useful sample is of the product that will actually be used in the workshop.
Supports and stiffness
Crossed layers help dimensional stability, but loads and distances between supports still need checking. A long shelf can sag even when made of plywood. Design sets thickness, reinforcement and fixings.
Moisture needs a specification
Panels differ in bonding and exposure classes. Before placing one in a utility room or near water, we review the product data, edge sealing and ability to dry. A generic “plywood” label is no guarantee against prolonged wetting.
Finish and care
Clear coating shows grain and layers; laminate changes the surface and cleaning needs. Either way, the edge needs a defined treatment. Care instructions belong to the finished assembly, not merely the core panel.
Compare the actual cost
Selected faces and exposed edges can cost more than a board hidden behind a front. Include machining, fittings, surface protection and installation in the comparison to decide where the layers are worth showing.
